Salted Watermelon WHAT?

Me, rehearsing my order: “I’ll have one delicious, creamy, luscious, yummy ice cream cone, please.”

{Glances at the longest and slowest moving line in the history of lines.}

Me, suddenly hysterical: “I DON’T HAVE 3 HOURS! WHY!?! WHY HAVE YOU FORSAKEN ME!?!?!?”

{Throws tired sweaty self into a bale of hay and wails.}

And my efforts to obtain a delectable ice cream cone at the half way point of My Last Long Pan Massachusetts Challenge training ride the other day? THWARTED. Unless I wanted to pitch a tent, lean my bike against a cow, and hunker down for the ‘scream in 2 days time, I had to get my mid-ride fuel from another source. Like my sweaty jersey pocket. Instead of the beautiful, sunflower filled farm that makes their own ice cream. Gah. Such is life.

Enter this weird little beauty.

Salted Watermelon Gu

Meet Salted Watermelon Gu. Hello, Gorgeous!

Unbeknownst to me, a bunch of runners voted in a GUMOCRACY campaign to select a new GU flavor. I don’t even know what that means. But it sounds fantastic! Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon Series and GU Energy Labs paired up and announced the first “Official GU Flavor of the Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon” back in March. Uh. Where the hell was I?! I don’t know how I missed the memo because I woulda been ALL OVER THIS FLAVOR. Thank goodness I found it!

GU developed three new flavors for the campaign – Salted Watermelon, Apple Cinnamon and Caramel Macchiato.  THEY’RE HOLDING OUT ON US!  Salted Watermelon GU Energy Gel was crowned the winner. I discovered the Salted Watermelon GU last Friday at my local bike shop and snatched it up. I’ll be honest. They had me at “watermelon” and “salted.”  Just like they already have me at “caramel” and “salted.” They also would have me with “Caramel Macchiato.” Sensing a trend here? I’m planning on petitioning both GU Energy Labs and the Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon Series for a hit of the stuff. It’s gotta be somewhere, right?

And GU Salted Watermelon taste?

Think Watermelon Jolly Rancher with a Dash of Salt.  And seriously. What CAN’T a salty watermelon Jolly Rancher do?!? It was a party in my cracked, dry mouth. (And didn’t pull out my fillings! Watermelon GU, 1. Watermelon Jolly Rancher, -2.) Superb! It did the trick!

Honestly? It could have tasted like one of those bullshit melted Fla-Vor-Ice Pops which I despised as a child, and I still would have been good with it.  I was fading. And in need of a quick fix. GU does the trick for me on long runs and long rides. There is a definite time and place for energy gels and chews. In the absence of my beloved, 72 mile awaited cone?  It was both the time and place.

And it didn’t disappoint.

Speaking of endurance events and fueling, check out this interesting infographic from the folks at the Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon Series. They reached out to us with it.  Neat, huh? They however did NOT reach out to us with the Watermelon Salted GU Energy Gels. Nor did GU Energy Labs. I wish they had. I would have been mainlining the stuff as soon as it fell into my greedy glycogen depleted paws.

What’s your go to endurance fuel? Have you ever run a Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon Series Event?  Flav-Or-Ice: Yeay or Nay?

How Long is a Marathon?

    • Hey. I always say, whatever works for ya! I do tend to turn to GU for long runs and rides. I also turn to chomps or chews. Something about chewing does it for me. Of course I’d really love a banana, slathered with peanut butter, but who’s jamming that in your pocket on a 90 degree day? GU Chomps/Gels usually win. 🙂

  1. Well, thank God that you are headed to the mecca of delicious, luscious, creamy ice cream cones, a/k/a Cape Cod! Sundae School is waiting for you (along with a zillion other awesome ice cream shops) and will have your fix ready in less than 3 hours! I, for one, cannot wait for the onion rings at Liam’s on Nauset beach, as well as a kick-ass cone. But I digress….
    I might actually try the Watermelon Gu even though those gel things usually skeeve me out. As do watermelon flavored things, but you had me at the “salted.” Salt…mmmmmm.

    • BOTH of their salted products I find quite lovely. And I’m counting the MINUTES to the PMC and post-PMC food and drink fest! I wasn’t already a fan of gels—but they do work for me.

      Now about that cone…..

    • I’M RIGHT THERE WITH YA!! I make a kick ass Watermelon Salad that’s salty from feta cheese. I love it. And salt on GRILLED pineapple? Is OFF THE CHAIN. Especially when it’s hanging off of a margarita. Just sayin’…..

  2. Salted watermelon sounds genius. I really like Gu in general though… But probably because it usually saves the day during a really long run.
    Cute infographic… There are definitely days I count runs in how many beers I’m going to consume later 🙂

  3. I can’t tell from your post…did you like the Gu?
    Also, I hope the hay bale you threw yourself into wasn’t one of those round ones. Those are so dangerous for the cattle! Everyone knows that cows need 4 square meals a day.

  4. I got one of those in my stride box (the salted watermelon gu) and have yet to try as I was a little hesitant…thanks for the feedback! I’ll take it with me on my next run now. 🙂

  5. YAY FOR FLA VOR ICE!!! (Flava flav?) I love that stuff.
    I heard about the salted watermelon from my friend in real life and blogland Sara and it was so weird that it even came up because she had just told me how much she liked putting salt on her watermelon. Usually I hate watermelon, but I think I need to try this flavor just because it sounds so weird and because of her and then now this review of it. All the universe signs are pointing me toward this stuff and it would just be wrong of me to say no.

    My favorite GU is the plain vanilla though. It reminds me of the icing packets that come in the Pillsbury Toaster Strudel box. When I was a kid I would eat the icing by itself. I probably still would if I ever got a box of Toaster Strudel.

    • Vanilla GU IS TOTALLY like the Toaster Strudel icing!!! Spot on! God. I haven’t had that in YEARS.

      The universe is pointing you to Salty Watermelon. I have an AWESOME salad recipe. Initially, I was a bit freaked by it. But after I inhaled the salad and my taste buds danced with glee, I quickly realized that Salt, Watermelon and I are BFFs.

      Awww. See what I did right there? 🙂

  6. hmmmm my go-to fuel. After being a Hammer Nutrition faithful for the past few years I’m kinda in limbo right now. I’m caught in between Gatorade Green Apple and Nuun. But by the end of the year I may try OSMO.

    • I am also a fan of Hammer Nutrition gels. And Skratch Labs. Love their products. Nuun is also VERY high on my list. I usually flip-flop between Skratch Labs and Nuun. Gatorade, once a staple, has taken a back seat. I’m not familiar with OSMO?

      • Nice! I learned about OSMO a few months ago through Brooks elite runner Ariana Hilborn. I’ve kept tabs with her the last four years and she uses OSMO products. She has also hanmer in the past and we both have super sensitive tummies so I figured if OSMO is working for her it won’t hurt to give it a shot 🙂

      • Skratch labs is fantastic. It started out as “Secret Drink Mix” because cyclists were replacing their sponsored beverages with this. I find it very easy on the belly. The guy who wrote the Feedzone Cookbook- Allen Lim-is one of the founders of the company. It’s all natural and doesn’t overload you with sugar while still fueling you. I really like it. 🙂 Check out the website. (And no. I’ve got nothin’ to do with the stuff. I just really like it!)
