Champagne and Hill Repeats. Or Things Not To Do. Ever.

Let’s see. Do I start with the Mexican Food I had for lunch? Or the glass of Champagne I had following it? {Note: Champs and beans do NOT mix. Tequila exists for a reason.} Or that I switched Hill Repeat Wednesday to Hill Repeat Tuesday because it was supposed to be Death Valley hot on Wednesday? Screw it. I’ll just start.

It sucked.

And I only have myself to blame. It’s because I was being polite. (And I love Champagne, but I digress.) We had a Celebration at work and because I am a Team Player, I imbibed. Yes. I swilled Champagne just before hazy, hot, humid hill repeats. Bart Yasso would never recommend doing such a thing. I got caught up in all the fun. Goddamn peer pressure.

Mid-swill it dawned on me.
Hills.

Home. Laced up and ready to run. I head out. 1.5 mile warm up. I am instantly brimming with regret. And cilantro. I’m dying already. I can feel it. I am acutely aware of the angry Mexican in my gut. He is wearing a beret and swearing in Span-çaise. He is clearly NOT up for this. I’m at the base of the hill. I look at my Garmin, kick myself in the ass, and sprint off.

400m STEEP repeats TIMES 8.

Do I need to go on? Every step. Every belch. Every ounce of sweat. Punishment. It was full on Sufferfest. The only highlight was a very peppy girl running downhill who high-fived me on the way up.

She yells: GET IT GIRL! EAT THAT HILL!
I manage to croak: BEANS.
And I drag my pathetic ass up. I’m trying to eat that hill. Only it’s tough with a belly full of beans steeping in bubbly.

She did make me snap out of my Champagne-Mexi-coma though. I love a high-five from a Random Runner. Best thing ever.

I almost quit before the eighth one, but thought better. I knew I would have been even more disgusted with myself. So I mopped the sweat off of my brow and launched up. Wouldn’t you know it. My fastest one.

Who knew Champs and Beans were Super Foods? I’m calling Bart.

Have you ever had a fellow runner high-five you on a run? Do you Drink and Run? Best Take-Out: Mexican, Chinese or Thai? Go!

  1. Drink and run? Never! I mean, I’ve had a glass of wine the night before a long run, but never right before. Don’t worry, no judgement here. Favorite take out is Chinese or Thai, but that’s only because I don’t have any excellent Mexican take out places near me. (bring on the beans & cheese!)

  2. I think I have drunk and run – with you. Haven’t we been to a few races where we shared a drink before? Maybe it was my other running BFF. And no, it never helps performance. I am so proud of you for getting in your hill repeats. And so glad I wasn’t running behind you. Ay Caramba!
What kind of fusion joint served up champs and tacos?

    • Didn’t we have a cocktail before a St. Paddy’s Day 5k? We did have that hung over Central Park Death Run. Despite the champs, I’m happy I did them. They suck. But they’re working. 🙂

  3. I am the queen of the Christopher Martin Drunk Run. Clearly you aren’t my sister….swithched at birth? That explains the 9yr age difference.

    • Mommy may have dropped you on your head. And somehow I’m the one who has the scar on the back of her melon. Ahhhh. The Christopher Martin’s Drunk Run. Total RUI. Good Times. Good Times. 🙂

  4. Haha very well written! I generally try to run in the morning because pretty much anything will make my stomach feel all kinds of weird during a run. I can’t believe you actually finished the hill repeats! I’m pretty sure I would have quietly quit after 3. Great job! Way to mentally push through! And also, I really liked your writing style here! (sorry, I’m a former English major, I have to comment on that kind of stuff sometimes!)

    • I’m pretty sure that the nun who taught me English is praying a novena for me right about now. Thank you! I write like I talk and think. Which is sometimes WAY tangential and laced with profanity but, it’s all I know. 🙂 I almost quit. I really did. That Peppy High Five Chick really did lift my spirits. And nausea.

  5. Ooof I feel your pain. Most of my Saturday morning long runs are fueled by the Mexican food and beer consumed on Friday night. No bueno.

Anyway, I’m quite impressed that you pushed through all 8 repeats. I would have barfed and quit for sure.

  6. You rock. 8 hill repeats after Mexican & champagne? My hero 😉
I once ran 8 miles after day drinking with a friend of mine, but thankfully it was an “easy” run. Made slightly harder by the alcohol in my system.
Also, I WISH more runners would high-five. I can hardly get a wave from fellow runners sometimes!

    • That high five was FANTASTIC. I have to say, this is probably my 6th high five from a Random Runner. Every time it happens, I kick it up a notch. 8 miles after a day of drinking?!?! Who’s the hero now? 😉

  7. Yes re: the high-5, but only from runners I know! The only time I drank and run was during the pub run I organized last spring. I had a Jello shot and a couple of beers, but I was running slowly–not doing hill repeats. I would die/barf if I drank before a speed workout!

  8. Wowsers, you did eight hill repeats? That’s hardcore! It’s always good to experience what not to do before running. I’ve done it lots and lots. My favourite not to do is green curry…definitely not a good meal of choice the night before a long run.

    • I would need to be put in Intensive Care if I ate green curry before hill repeats. Gah. Thank you. I’ve gotta be honest. I have no damn idea if that’s a lot. Is it?! They sucked. Either way. They sucked. 🙂

  9. I have drank and run before, but not on an interval day you crazy girl!! Thai food is my favorite take out for sure. If I even think about mexican food before I run I will probably struggle, that is like the only thing my stomach can’t handle pre run!

    • BUT I LOVE CHAMPAGNE! Funny because after writing this, I immediately grabbed Thai take out. Love me some Thai. The absolute only food I couldn’t eat before a tough workout is Indian. Curry and hill repeats don’t mix. Eek. 🙂

  10. Hahaha, again, yours is my second favorite blog. Funny stuff. Some of my favorite Mexican ingredients are cilantro and regret. Did you really say ‘beans’. I hope so. Never mind, don’t tell me, I don’t want to be disappointed if you didn’t.
I wont’ drink before running, but I have done the beer mile twice. It.Is.Awful. Some early morning runs though I can get the nasty burps of the previous night’s white russian. That’s never nice.

    • Beans. I said. BEANS. It came out as a croak. It was awful. True. Story. I have no idea how you did the beer mile. That is just hideous. Beer After Miles. That’s my new motto. And champs? Well shit. I’d still have Champagne. I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t. 🙂

  11. ohh my goodness. I went for an easy run after eating a burrito once, and I burped up burrito for an hour. can’t imagine doing hill repeats, but I’m pretty sure the burrito would have come up whole. haha other foods I’ve eaten immediately before a run that back up to say hi : pineapple, watermelon, chicken sandwich…
